Ceiling Batten
Measuring Tips

Things to consider when measuring

  • Which way do the trusses run? The battens will run perpendicular to them?

  • Is there room for fixing against the walls? Sometimes braces and steel beams are in the way. You may need to subtract a batten and add some additional perimeter angle.

  • Do you need any extra perimeter angle? The may be little cupboards or wall areas where clips can’t be installed.

Things to consider when placing your order

  • Are you using 20mm or 35mm battens?

  • What centre spacing are you working from? (400mm or 600mm)

  • Are you ordering standard 6m lengths or utilising the cut to length service? If working with standard lengths, we recommend working out how many you need and round up to the nearest 5. Eg, 42.8 lengths rounds up to 45 lengths.

  • What clips are you using? Are there a mixture of clips required for the job?

  • Round the number of clips to the nearest 10 of the total linear metres of batten required. E.g. 475.6 lineal metres = 480 clips

  • Don’t forget to order the Earth Strapping.

Strongbacks
(Used when suspending a ceiling more than 180mm below trusses)

  • Strongbacks come in standard lengths of 3.6m and 4.5m.

  • Use the width of the room to determine which length of stringback you require and allow one strongback for every vacant metre. E.g. in a 4.2m x 5.8m room, use a 4.5m strongback to cover the width of the room. Using 1 every vacant metre, you’ll need 5 strongbacks across the 5.8m run.

  • To avoid having to join strongbacks you may need to change which direction the battens run. If the build has a concrete or steel ceiling try and have the batten run lengthwise in the room so a strongback wont need to be joined.

  • If you need to join a strongback, simply fasten them back to back with a 150mm overlap and use self drilling wafer screws through the pre drilled holes at the end of the strongback.
